The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina has reached a historic milestone with gaining full federal recognition. As founding partners of Current Tribal Law & Policy, PLLC and proud citizens of the Lumbee Tribe, we are honored to celebrate this achievement. This recognition marks a significant step forward for the Lumbee people and Indian Country as a whole. It reflects more than a century of perseverance by tribal leaders, community members, and supportive legislators.

The Importance of Full Federal Recognition for the Lumbee Tribe

Federal recognition grants tribes a government-to-government relationship with the United States. For the Lumbee Tribe, this means access to federal programs, funding, and legal protections that support tribal sovereignty and economic development.

The Lumbee Tribe has long sought this status. Unlike many tribes, the Lumbee did not receive full federal recognition despite their historic and continuous presence in North Carolina. This federal acknowledgment corrects a longstanding oversight and opens doors for future growth.

Honoring the Work of Previous Generations

The journey to federal recognition did not happen overnight. It reflects the dedication of many generations who fought to preserve Lumbee culture and governance. Tribal elders, activists, and leaders worked tirelessly to maintain Tribal unity and advocate for recognition.

Their efforts included legal battles, lobbying Congress, and educating the public about the Lumbee’s unique heritage. This achievement honors their sacrifices and commitment to the Tribe’s future.

Gratitude to Legislators Supporting Recognition

This milestone would not be possible without the support of key legislators who championed the Lumbee cause. Members of Congress from both parties recognized the importance of federal recognition for the Tribe and its positive impact on Indian Country.

Their bipartisan support, spearheaded by Senator Thom Tillis, helped pass legislation that finally granted the Lumbee Tribe federal status. We extend our sincere appreciation to these lawmakers for their leadership and dedication to justice.

What Federal Recognition Means for Indian Country

The Lumbee Tribe’s recognition strengthens Indian Country by adding one of the largest tribes in the Country to the list of federally recognized nations. This status enhances the collective voice of tribes in policy discussions and federal programs.

It also adds to the existing precedent for other tribes seeking recognition. The Lumbee’s success shows that persistence and collaboration with lawmakers can lead to meaningful change.

For Indian Country, this recognition means more opportunities for cultural preservation, economic development, and self-governance. It reinforces the importance of respecting tribal sovereignty across the nation.

Looking Ahead: Opportunities and Challenges

With federal recognition, the Lumbee Tribe faces new opportunities and responsibilities. Access to federal resources can support education, healthcare, and infrastructure improvements. It also allows the Tribe to further exercise its jurisdiction and expand its government services and programs.

At the same time, the Tribe must navigate the complexities of federal regulations and funding requirements. Building capacity to manage these resources effectively will be crucial but the Lumbee people are well-equipped to be good stewards of this funding as evidenced by the success of the Tribe's housing program through NAHASDA.

Our Commitment to the Lumbee Tribe and Indian Country

As attorneys and citizens of the Lumbee Tribe, we feel a deep connection to this achievement. We celebrate the Tribe’s federal recognition not only as a legal milestone but as a moment of pride and hope.

We will continue to honor the legacy of those who fought for this day. We also look forward to working with tribal leaders and citizens to build a strong future.

Federal recognition is a foundation. The real work now is to use this status to improve lives, protect culture, and strengthen tribal governance.

We invite our colleagues in Indian Country and supporters of tribal sovereignty to join us in recognizing the Lumbee Tribe’s accomplishment. Together, we can advance justice and opportunity for all tribes.
